Stefan Hessbrüggen-Walter presented a talk "Accommodating Angels"

Assistant Professor Stefan Hessbrüggen-Walter gave a talk at the seminar "Contemporary metaphysics". He discussed some of the difficulties faced by Descartes, Hobbes, and Leibniz when trying to accomodate the spatial presence of angels in their theories, and argued that none of these attempts was ultimately successful.

In the early modern period, many general assumptions in Aristotelian cosmology that were relevant for angelological questions, had lost traction with the advent of the "new science": the course of the planets is not governed by intelligences, but by laws of nature. The notion of "heavens" as the purported home of angels had been abandoned as well. Yet, angels must be able to be present in the spatiotemporal world: this is an essential part of their "job description", so to say.
